Don Gordon announces his Florida 2000 election plan

"If you can't beat them, cheat them."

Loser candidate tries to steal the election in the courts. Sound familiar to anyone? Hint: it's not George Bush in Florida. Don Gordon, loser in the 49th Ward aldermanic election last week, is taking his GOP playbook to court this week. He has challenged the results of the election on the basis of ... nothing. While my fellow bloggers disgrace themselves in their slavish service to DG, they have failed to produce a single shred of evidence there was anything wrong with the election last week. On behalf of the blogging community, I want to apologize. We're not all bananas!

Don Gordon working to undo minority voting rights

It has become apparent that Don Gordon does not truly believe in the democratic process. Alderman Joe Moore won a majority of votes on Tuesday but Don Gordon just can’t come to grips with defeat. He has made it known that he might challenge the election results. That’s a pretty ballsy move coming from a campaign that systematically sought to challenge the rights of minority voters during Tuesday’s elections. There are reports of Gordon’s Goons challenging people’s right to vote in every precinct. Gordon’s thugs were constantly poll gating. They put in so many unfounded complaint calls to the Board of Election that even they are now upset with Gordon. A bunch of Gordon poll watchers were ejected for doing what they were trained to do, namely, cheat the democratic process especially when a minority walked up to vote. Despite all of this, now Gordon wants to challenge the results. Sorry Don, in this country, people still have the right to vote – no matter the color of their skin.

Don Gordon Loser Watch. Day 2

Two days after losing the election, why is Don Gordon still trying to prove he’s a Republican? Sound bananas? It is. Don Gordon has started spinning conspiracy theories about how everyone got together to defeat him on Tuesday. Time to put up or go home, Don. Show us the proof!

I really hope Gordon is not serious about this recount. He is now claiming that there were 2,000 invalid votes amongst the total. He has no evidence at all for these claims. Stop being a sore looser Don Gordon. 2000 votes are not invalid just because they were cast by minorities.

Gordon Salutes the voters

Alderman Joe Moore thanks community for election victory

A hand count of the last outstanding precinct in the 49th Ward on Tuesday confirmed 49th Ward Alderman Joe Moore’s re-election. The final count placed Moore 247 votes ahead of his opponent, Don Gordon, giving Moore 51.6% of the votes to Gordon’s 48.4%.

“I want to thank the voters who took part in yesterday’s election for our victory, and I look forward to representing everyone in my community for another four years whether they voted for me or my opponent,” Moore said.
Moore ran his re-election campaign on the promise to fight for a new living wage ordinance and to reform the Chicago City Council. Moore was re-elected by the same wave of progressive voting that produced a dramatic change in the composition of the Chicago City Council. “Chicago voters clearly voted for a progressive, independent government on Tuesday. I plan to make sure that they get it,” Moore said

Joe Moore will not be Swift Boated

Big money republicans are trying to take over the 49th ward. David Herro who is for big business and against the living-wage gave Don Gordon $60,000 in an attempt to steal the election. Don Gordon gladly accepted this money because he supports a Republican agenda in the 49th Ward. Read this Tribune article for more information.

Alderman alleges Swift Boat tie in local race

In new attack ads airing on Chicago TV stations, Ald. Joe Moore (49th) criticizes the major donor to challenger Don Gordon for his ties to Republicans.
Gordon's campaign has received $60,000 from Gold Coast mutual fund manager David Herro, who, according to federal records, gave $5,000 in 2004 to Swift Boat Vets and POWs for Truth. That group funded attack ads against Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry, a Vietnam War veteran.
Moore's commercials refer to Herro as "the same Republican millionaire behind the sleazy Swift boat veterans' ads from George Bush." The 30-second spot is airing on Channels 2, 5, 7, 9 and 32, Moore said.

The Truth About Moore

The scathing commentary I have observed on several blogs is a gross exaggeration and unfair representation of Alderman Moore’s proven record as an independent progressive in the City Council. Joe Moore has overseen a steady and major improvement in all areas affecting the quality of life for 49th Ward residents. He has shown himself to be hard working, progressive and effective—a strong advocate in the Chicago City Council for those who live and work in the 49th Ward.

Tax on Natural Gas

Mayor Daley proposed a series of tax increases for the budget with a view to off-setting the City’s personnel costs. Grudgingly the City Council passed the measure in a 47-3 vote (Only Dorothy Tillman, Toni Preckwinkle and Arenda Troutman voted No). One of the provisions was an increase in the tax on natural gas. Though an increase in the cost of heating oil may impact some of the more vulnerable in the 49th Ward, it is not a widespread phenomena to observe heating bills in the range of $500 to heat a home. Those who do find themselves in such a situation have various means of recourse through programs that Alderman Moore has staunchly supported.

Stamping out Slumlords in the 49th Ward
Alderman Moore has a staff member permanently assigned to work on residential landlord-tenant issues. This staff member works very closely with landlords and tenants to resolve outstanding lease issues and to correct outstanding City Building Code violations. Inspections by representatives of the City's Building Department are arranged if necessary, and a 49th Ward Staff member attends all hearings if the violations are serious enough to warrant a Housing Court case. In dozens of instances where there has been criminal activity associated with a particular building, the Alderman has requested that the building owner attend a meeting at the 49th Ward Service Office with officers from the 24th Police District, 49th Ward Staff and neighbors of the building in order to arrive at solutions for the problems tied to the property. Many of these properties are currently among the more well-maintained in the 49th Ward. During Alderman Moore's tenure literally hundreds of buildings have been subject to City Building Inspections and their owners have been forced to bring their building into compliance with city regulations. In the worst cases Alderman Moore has successfully lobbied judges to order buildings vacated, and in three cases landlords have actually been required to do jail time for their neglect.
The 49th Ward experienced serious problems with a developer who engaged in bank fraud involving the conversion of twelve buildings to condominiums from 2000 to 2001. This developer used fraudulent appraisals and brokered mortgages through his own mortgage brokerage company to sell 153 condominium units to 16 conspirators at drastically inflated prices. The buildings sat vacant and began to suffer from neglect and drew criminal activity. Alderman Moore coordinated efforts of numerous City Departments, Community Organizations, neighbors, friendly attorneys, responsible developers and banks in order to turn these buildings around. A process that many thought would take over three and one-half years was accomplished in one year and today all of those buildings are in responsible hands and have either started selling or renting units or will be doing so soon.
Voting Record
Along with his accomplishments in the Ward, Moore’s voting record proves that he is a true progressive and independent voice in the city council, only agreeing with the Mayor on average 77% of the time compared to some of his colleagues who vote with the Mayor up to 95% of the time. He voted Yes, in the face of Mayoral opposition to the Big Box Ordinance. (Amendment of Title 4 of Municipal of Chicago by creation of new Chapter 404 entitled “Large Retailers”; 7/26/2006). Moore’s courage in the council will allow many workers in Chicago to be appropriately remunerated for their hard work and allow them to provide a decent standard of living to their families.

An Alderman for everyone in this Diverse Community
Alderman Moore has always maintained an effective balance between the need to generate business in the 49th Ward with the need for capital improvements and increased city services. Claiming that Alderman Moore is propping up business at the expense of poor people in the 49th is a cheap play on an emotive issue and it is simply not true.

Alderman Moore doing what he does best: Providing Real Results for Real People

Diversity of color, culture and income all coexist in Rogers Park

Rogers Park is by far the most diverse place I’ve been. According to the 2000 census, it’s the most diverse place I will ever be in the United States. I appreciate that Rogers Park uncourageous diversity in every way, but I have been shocked lately. A group of individuals/bloggers, how ever boisterous as they are small (fortunately) have been promoting Don Gordon for Alderman and in doing so are jeopardizing the unique character of this community. Don Gordon does not have the welfare of everyone in this community on his agenda. He supports progress in the 49th ward at heavy costs to low income families, as well as the integrity of our neighborhood. Joe Moore has shown sensitivity, understanding, and effectiveness in keeping this diverse community moving forward. Faced with the facts, instead of ranting professional bloggers,(in this case professional is defined as having nothing better going on in their lives: Craig Gernhart, Toni Duncan, Tom Westgard, Tom Mannis and Laura Loozer or Louzader take your pick), why would anyone ever vote for someone like Don Gordon?
